Things To See On Your Holidays In Laos

June 25th, 2009
With Burma around the corner, Laos is one of the most beautiful landlocked countries in Southeast Asia. Known as the Land of the Million Elephants, Laos is filled with forested landscapes, and rugged mountains all through. The climate here is tropical, and rains happen between May and November. It is part of the Golden triangle, since it is a country where Opium is grown here.

With economy on the upward slide, tourism is the major source of income in Laos. People come here to explore the hidden terrains, learn more about their culture, unique language, and style of dressing. Buddhism is the predominant religion here and so don’t be surprised to see all those temples strewn across. Keep in mind, these five things that you must see when holidaying in Laos.

A large spiritual cave dug into the limestone cliff that is facing the river is what makes Pak Ou caves so popular. The caves are filled with images of Buddha in various styles and shapes, but the most beautiful is the Luang Prabang model of standing Buddha. There are tours conducted almost on a daily basis to this place, and the only means of transport is by boat from Ban Pak Ou.

Plain of Jars is another popular destination with tourists staying in Laos. The only reason the place is called Plain of jars is because through the coastal region, there are huge jars strewn all over the place. There are three places which are open to public, of which one of them has the most number of jars. Most of these jars are nearly 2000 years old, and the mystery behind them is that they are all filled with bones, or food remains and has no other information on them. Some of the jars are as heavy as 6 tonnes, and made of stone, which was not very common in this area.

Known to be the largest waterfall in all of Asia, Khone Phapheng is beautiful and breath taking. It is located in the south side of Si Phan Don. If you are lucky, you could get to see plenty of dolphins around this region.

A place that is very special to residents of Laos is the Pha That Laung. This is where one sees Budhhism and Lao sovereignty go hand in hand. The monument looks like a missile from afar, and when getting close, one sees that it is a tall structure with small windows on the sides. A major festival happens here every year in November, which is the highlight of the place.

A small structure, which is very tiny when compared to the Angkor era sites, Wat Phu is a monument that is very unique. The ornate shiva sanctuary, and the crocodile stone are what make the place so enigmatic and popular amidst visitors. A three day Buddhist festival takes place here every year, when worshippers make their way up the Wat Phu Champasak, and also leave offerings.

If your budget is tight then do not worry as finding a cheap accommodation in Goa is very easy. The transportation costs are low and the food too won’t burn a hole in your pocket. The city is situated just off the western coast of India and has much more to offer than just its lovely, sun kissed beaches. In fact, many of the city’s best attractions are hidden inland away from the beaches.

Legions of travelers come to Goa every year to surf the famous sandy shores and enjoy the various beach and water sports. Calangute, Vagator and Anjuna with its flea market are amongst the most familiar beaches. The tourists are suggested to try out Palolem too, which is a less visited beach and not widely known by most tourists. Laze around the beaches, sun bath, and enjoy the various activities like scuba diving, parasailing, swimming and other interesting sports.

If want to take a break from sunbathing then go on a trip to the capital Panaji, which is situated 30 kilometers from the airport. Cheap holidays in Goa are well supported by the corporation bus service that runs to all major destinations of the city so that you do not have to spend too much traveling within the city. The private buses are overcrowded, noisy and run to a particular schedule. Also try one of the many river cruises on offer for a relaxing end to a relaxing day.

Is a Christmas or Holiday Cruise Right for You?

June 17th, 2009
Home for the holidays has a nice sound to it, until you actual get on the freeways, compete for precious parking space, and unwrap your presents for the nice airport security people so you can wait for four hours for your flight. As some heroic individuals do try to go home for the holidays, another travel is also heading out of town. But there’s no security checkpoint, no weather delay, and no gift-giving anxiety. These people are going on a holiday cruise. For the right people under the right circumstances, there is no better way to spend the holidays than on the sea.

Most cruise lines offer special packages that cruise over Christmas and New Year’s, typically with an upcharge that reflects some of the extra festivities that passengers will experience. Many holiday cruises offer special meals, decorations, and parties to commemorate Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and the fare reflects this.

Holiday cruises sell out early, so if you want to try this next year, make your decisions as early as you can. In fact, it might be good timing now to book for the 2008 Christmas cruise!

While the cruise lines do an outstanding job of making the voyage as festive as possible, the fact is that Christmas on a cruise ship is just not a traditional experience. Particularly in the Caribbean, the warm weather, palm trees, and pristine beaches just don’t seem to match the mood of the season. For that reason, cruise passengers for the holidays should make certain mental as well as physical preparations.

First, be flexible. If you have a Christmas card holiday in mind, a cruise vacation may make you feel like you’re missing Christmas. You need to have a sense of adventure and a desire to create new traditions and seek new experiences.

Second, take some Christmas with you. Whether you’re traveling with one person or a group, take along some gift-wrapped presents to exchange on the big day. If your family always had certain holiday traditions (such as a midnight snack on Christmas eve or chocolate candy on Christmas day or opening stockings stuffed with presents early in the morning) you might be able to figure out a way to “import” that to the cruise. This will help you merge the traditional Christmas with the cruise Christmas.

Third, you need to ponder for a moment the real meaning of the holidays for you. Whether it’s Christmas, Hanukkah, or New Year’s Eve, holidays are holidays for a reason. Think about what they mean to you and allow the cruise to complement that.

For example, New Year’s Eve may be a time when you enjoy getting dressed up for big parties and when you like to relax and reflect on the year gone by. Great, you can do that (and more) on a cruise ship.

Get in the party mood. The crew on your ship is working this holiday and that can be hard thing. Many crew members have long-term contracts and don’t see their families or native countries for months at a time. They are tasked with creating a festive mood for you; do them a favor, reciprocate. Be generous with your tips and your thank-yous.

Holiday cruises work out well in situations where you can cruise with your family (like a combination reunion-Christmas cruise) or in situations where you feel like you can’t face a traditional holiday. If you’re recently divorced or widowed or find yourself in a situation where you can get some time off but can’t (or don’t want to) go home, a cruise is a great solution.

Talk to your cruise line about what sorts of activities are planned and if you might need special attire. Many cruises offer formal or lavish holiday type events, so you may need to bring evening clothes (or perhaps more than one set of formal wear).

If you’ve grown up in a cold climate and plan on spending Christmas or New Year’s in the Carribean or other warm-water destinations, be prepared for a jolt. Even if you know it’s going to be warm, even if you think you’ll love the fact that it’s warm, even if you think you don’t care that it’s warm.

Even people who grow up in warm climates will tell you that it is an odd experience to watch an 80-degree breeze ripple the tinsel on the Christmas tree and how odd it feels to hum along to carols in your bathing suit. Sunbathing on Christmas Day may sound delightful, but you will get a sort of weird sensation if it actually happens.

Be prepared for this by making sure you do get some familiar holiday traditions worked into your cruise vacation.

While last-minute cruising is a bit of an art form (and can be a good way to save a few bucks on a great cruise), it hardly ever applies to holiday cruising. It really is a good time right now to plan a cruise for next year’s holiday.

Why so early? Well, for one thing, holiday cruises book up early. Some people have literally made a Christmas or New Year’s cruise a tradition. And cruises are getting increasingly popular in general, so holiday cruising is only going to see increasing demand.

The other reason is that you will save money but have lots of choices. Most cruise lines are willing to discount fares to two types of passengers: those who book early and those who book very, very late. The late-comers are really just filling up space that would have gone empty otherwise. Late-comers can get deals, but they never get a choice. You pretty much have to take what you can get.

On the other hand, most cruise lines are very generous to early birds. It’s good business. The theory is that if the cruise ship can sell out far in advance, the cruise company will not have to scramble to sell fares at the last minute … less advertising, less promotion, less last-minute discounting frenzy. It helps them to encourage passengers to book early, so they encourage you the best way they know. They offer discounts.

Don’t expect massive discounts by booking early. But you can probably land a pretty good deal. One thing that most cruise lines will do for people who book cruises months ahead of time–they will work in some upgrades. You may be able to upgrade your stateroom or get some on-board credits as well as a less-than-rack-rate passage.

Think it’s really too early to start planning next year’s holiday cruise? Go online and look at the cruise companies. They all have announced their schedules for 2008, some far beyond that.

Maybe next year you can get a suntan for Christmas!

Enjoy A Beach Holiday To Cancun

June 16th, 2009
When you think about a beach holiday, consider going to Cancun. The white sandy beaches with the blue waters in the background are what make Cancun more stunning than any area around. If you think about it, Cancun is one big beach. If you are taking the little ones to the beaches, they will have no problem playing in the sand in the bright sunlight. The sand is airy and composed of plankton fossils, which gives it a cool feeling rather than a hot feeling under your feet. It is truly a delightful place to enjoy the beach.

If you are looking for a great area to do some snorkeling in Cancun, the Westin Regina area has the best place to snorkel. If you think you need a little privacy for topless sunbathing, the beaches do not frown on this practice, but it depends what the area hotel has to say about the practice. Your beach holiday will be one of the best holidays you have ever had. You can swim in the Caribbean or swim in the Nichupte Lagoon. The Bahia de Mujees is great for swimming because of the low waves. The Caribbean is where you will find the waves for surfing and scuba diving.

The Nichupte Lagoon is a nice place to swim, but the crocodiles that live in the area, may leave people with a bit of skepticism. They crocodiles are said to be harmless and not aggressive, but one can never believe that a crocodile is harmless. You would be better enjoying the other area beach locations than the lagoon. Many of the area restaurants do feed the crocodiles for visitors to see. This alone can make someone a little leery about swimming. Your beach holiday can be enjoyed without seeing the crocodiles.

When you are planning your beach holiday for your holiday to Cancun, you will want to schedule some time for sightseeing. Try the submarine tour by Playa Linda beach. This is an incredible experience, but if you are afraid of tight quarters, you might need to skip the tour. It is amazing to see the underwater activity without getting wet. Many of the beaches are located near the restaurants and shopping malls. One beach in particular that is ideal for children is accessible by going through the Xcaret bus terminal. Cancun has more beach space and accessing some the popular spots requires going through the building and establishments that build up in front of the beaches.

Your beach holiday to Cancun can include beaches during the day and some fun and exciting nightlife after dark. The sun goes down and the people come out for some live entertainment and dancing. The clubs have karaoke, dancing, live bands and some have a quiet environment for relaxing. You will even find a piano bar. You will enjoy a beach holiday to Cancun because the beaches are exciting and the water is just right for swimming and everything else.

Beach Holidays in Bulgaria

June 15th, 2009
Bulgaria has a long coastline along the Black sea bordered by Turkey to the south and Romania to the north. Along this stretch, one can find large international resorts, ancient towns, big cities, and numerous villages. Bulgaria’s resorts are not newcomers to the international holiday market. During its 40 years of communism, Bulgaria was the main beach destination for the Soviet bloc countries, greeting hundreds of thousands of Russians, Poles, East Germans and others from that side of the Berlin wall. It took about 10 years after the fall of communism for the tourism industry to reinvigorate, however. For a decade, the resorts experienced almost no development. Then, going along with the global property boom, billions of dollars were poured into Bulgaria transforming its coastline, its ski resorts and its major cities. Now, the country is frequented by British, Irish, German and other tourists from Western Europe along with the traditional tourists from the East. Bulgarians themselves, after period of tough transition with hyperinflation, banking crisis, declining incomes and sky-high unemployment, started traveling again at the turn of the century. Now, the beach resorts in Bulgaria offer a spectacular mixture of cultures from every corner of Europe.

The two largest resorts are Sunny Beach and Golden Sands. Golden Sands is on the north coast, about 20 km from the sea capital of Bulgaria Varna. Sunny Beach is on the southern coast, also nearby a large city - Bourgas. A number of international flights arrive in both Varna and Bourgas from major European cities year round. One can also reach Varna and Bourgas by flying into the capital of Sofia and then taking a bus ride that lasts about 6 hours. Sunny Beach is by far the largest resort, accommodating hundreds of thousands of tourists each summer. It offers 5-star hotels, dozens of three and four star hotels and many apartment complexes where tourists can rent a private apartment. Golden Sands is smaller because its expansion is constrained by the steep hills surrounding its beach. However, the mixture of beach and forest is a major attraction to many tourists. Other popular resorts include Albena situated near Golden Sands, and Duni on the southern coast.

Besides the resorts, the two most famous destinations on the Bulgarian Black sea coast are Nessebar and Sozopol. Both are ancient Greek fishing town, thousands of years old, that have preserved much of their historic character. Nessebar is a UNESCO - protected historical destination. Both towns are splendidly picturesque built on top of large rock overlooking the sea. The architecture of the towns is unique, making for wonderful walks through their cobblestoned streets and along the promenades surrounding each of them. They also offer dozens of accommodation options including hotels and apartments, as well as numerous restaurants, bars, and shops. There is really something for everyone. And indeed everyone seems to come in the high season of July and August. It may therefore not be a bad idea to visit in May, June or September. The weather is still wonderful, all shops and restaurants are open but the crowds are smaller. And prices are significantly lower.

Top Ten Holiday Destinations

June 13th, 2009
There are loads of websites online which can tell you what they consider to be the top ten holiday destinations. However, with these sites it is usually ones that they are trying to get you to arrange your next holiday to. But when it comes to really discover where the top ten holiday destinations are in any given year the best place to start your search is using the World Tourism Organization website.

Each year they release information regarding which countries had the most visitors in a year compared to others. Also they provide information which clearly shows those countries which have seen a marked increase in the number of visitors from abroad visiting them. They also help to break down this list into the various continents showing which countries within Europe, Asia, Africa and the Americas were the most popular.

For example with Europe the most popular country visited by tourists from around the globe is Italy, followed closely by them visiting France, Spain, UK and Germany. In fact currently around 18% of all holidaymakers travel to Europe each year for a vacation. The reason for this being is that many like to learn more about the architecture, culture and history of the many towns and cities within them.

When it comes to Africa the most popular destination for travellers from around the world is Egypt. However, now countries such as South Africa, Rwanda, Tunisia and Morocco are certainly becoming ever more popular as well. All of these countries offer a wide array of activities and wonderful places for the travellers to visit.

Of course this year 2008 certainly one place which has been attracting many tourists to its shores is of course China. Mainly because this is the year where both the Olympics and Para Olympics would be taking place. But along with China other destinations in Asia that are seeing an increase in visitors are Japan and Thailand. All of which although popular with visitors from around the world have still been able to retain much of their own identity and have not been influenced too much by our Western ways.

Along with searching the World Tourism Organization website for what holiday destinations are the most popular take a look at other websites such as the Independent Tour Operators one. They offer a list of the top ten destinations for 2008 and their list seems to be dominated by Western European countries currently. So what are proving to the most popular ten holiday destinations in 2008 according to Independent Tour Operators?

Tresco, Isles of Scilly – This is situated of the west coast of England and is going to be a favorite because of the new built luxury development of holiday homes on it.

Naples, Italy – There is not only many of the historic landmarks of the city which have recently been restored for you to spend time viewing, but it has some really wonderful shops and restaurants also. Plus you are within easy reach of such attractions as Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast.

City Breaks, France – Since the setting up of Eurostar getting to anyone of this countries wonderful cities not just Paris has become much quicker and easier. Although many may not believe it but you will receive a truly warm welcome when you visit any part of France.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia – This is a truly magnificent place where at the moment being able to visit the World Heritage Site here is free currently. Although one can explore the upper levels of the temples here there are certain areas which have now been restricted and visitors are no longer able to gain access to.

Western Iceland – This is a place where if you are looking for seclusion when on holiday is ideal. Throughout your time the chances of you being disturbed are almost zero so being able to relax and unwind won’t be a problem.

Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico – This is a place where many different cultures come together and where it seems that you could almost be in Egypt because of the pyramids here. Also when it comes to food you will be spoilt for choice as all cuisine here has been influenced by the Spanish, French and Lebanese.

Cook Islands, South Pacific – This is the perfect location if you are looking for some winter sun. Currently this place seems to be proving popular with holiday makers from the UK as the pound is very strong against the New Zealand dollar.

Monte Carlo – For many English people renewed there has been renewed interest in this city because of Lewis Hamilton winning the Formula 1 Grand Prix. However, the price of staying here is certainly not cheap and costs can rise considerably during the week when the Grand Prix does take place each year.

Zambia Family Safaris – The reason that Zambia is gaining in popularity even though many people still travel to Kenya, Tanzania and Botswana for safaris is the cost. Not only is Zambia less expensive than the other destinations we have mentioned but the accommodation is suitable for families being large tribe sized homes. Plus the variety of wildlife to be seen is just as wide as in the other countries where safaris are popular.

Togo & Benin, West Africa – If you are looking for somewhere which offers a completely different kind of view of Africa then these are two destinations worth considering. Plus currently the number of visitors making this one of the top ten holiday destinations is currently not that many so it still remains pretty much like it has for many centuries before.
