Ponta Dos Ganchos is Brazil’s most exclusive resort, and winter holidays in Brazil make sense because of the favourable weather during the winter months. Rated as a top South American Hotel I was lucky enough to be taken there by family who live in Brazil.

Where is it? Obviously in Brazil, but in fact it is surrounded by the famous Costa Esmerelda, and about 45 minutes from Florianopolis airport. I also discovered it is a member of the Relais & Chateaux group, and as yet one of the great undiscovered hotels of the world.

I asked my uncle if we could have a totally Brazil vacation, and I said I had stayed in some of the best tropical vacation spots, what was there in the way of Brazilian vacation resorts which is why we ended up at Ponta Dos Ganchos.

It is a beautiful resort a real gem with only twenty rooms, and our room was truly stunning with a private pool, private sauna, and indoor Jacuzzi overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The bathroom was absolutely huge with double shower, his ‘n her toilets, double basins, there was even an outdoor shower.

The sundeck came equipped with a hammock and two long sunbeds, there was a well stocked bar, where everything non alcoholic was complimentary, and the flat screen television even rotated so you could watch it in bed or in the sitting room - fabulous!!

There are two restaurants, one where you eat breakfast or light lunch which is served all day, and the main restaurant where you could eat outside or inside, and it is on two levels. Lunch runs all afternoon, and dinner until the early hours of the morning so there is no pressure to stick to a routine. The food is good, not outstanding but lots of seafood which I love, and wine is at about European restaurant prices. Be warned that the staff although most attentive don’t speak English!!

We did some exploring, and found villages close by, the water was calm and clear for swimming, and we were lucky enough to see dolphins off the coast by the marine reserve. This hotel deserves its’ reputation as one of the best Brazilian vacation resorts in fact it is one of the best tropical resorts I have stayed in.

A beautiful castle built atop the Mountain Auf, Qala’at ar- Rabad is renowned for the Islamic architecture styles. It was originally built by Generals working with Saladin and looks upon the entire Jordan valley and the wadis that lead into it as well. A castle that one just should not miss while visiting Jordan speaks about the history of Jordan and its rulers.

In Amman, this Citadel sits on the highest point in the hill, Jebel Al Qala. It is also the ancient site filled with artifacts from the Bronze age, which reflect on how rich the fort must have been in earlier times. A fortress that is grand and majestic can be toured on foot, after one picks up the ticket from the foot of the citadel, in the office. There are people who come from various parts of the world just to visit this place, and take in the beauty.

We stood in a candle lit cave, our usually sceptical, rational selves already feeling vaguely challenged by the possibility that supernatural phenomena might, after all, exist. The darkness and coolness was a stark contrast to the dazzling brightness and heat of the midday sun we had left to descend into this underworld of prophecies and priests.

The silence of the grotto was suddenly interrupted by a heavily accented voice, speaking in English. “Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is six hundred threescore and six.”

Half expecting a beast with 666 stamped on its forehead, we turned to see a bearded man, dressed in the priesthood robes of Greek orthodoxy. He was not looking in our direction and at first it seemed that the biblical quotation had been a soliloquy. But the puzzle of why a Greek would talk to himself in English was solved seconds later, when the first of a party of Americans came into view. As soon as they began to fill the limited space of the cave, we recognised them as being a group of “Christian Tourists” we had seen earlier that day. The spell had been broken; the cave had lost its supernatural feeling, replaced by something as mundane as an evangelical meeting. It was time for us to go back up to the world of dazzling sunlight.

Our visit to the Sacred Grotto of the Revelation, where John the Divine is supposed to have foreseen and written of the Apocalypse, was part of a wonderful day we spent exploring the beautiful island of Patmos.

Patmos is part of the group of Greek Islands known as the Dodecanese. Our holiday base was on the neighbouring, and much larger, island of Samos where we had hopped on a boat to take us across the ten miles or so of the Aegean sea that separates the two islands. A one day visit was all we needed to know that Patmos was our kind of holiday destination.

Above the cave is the Byzantine monastery of Saint John and the wonderful medieval village of Hora. Laying fifteen to twenty minutes walk below Hora is the island’s capital, Skala. This charming little port is the largest settlement on Patmos. Scooters wiz noisily around narrow, street corners where men sit at pavement cafés on rickety chairs playing backgammon games. Pickup trucks, pull up to unload fruit and vegetables without paying any heed to the honking horns of other motorists who shout and gesticulate that their way has been blocked. Yet somehow, in a quintessential, Greek Island way, the noise and bustle blends seamlessly into an atmosphere that is totally laid back and relaxing.

Patmos has other several other pretty villages that are worth exploring but its most attractive feature is its convoluted coastline. A new vista of wonderful beaches appears from around every headland. Some are sandy and some are adorned in pretty white pebbles. Several are fringed by lush vegetation whilst others are found amongst rocky, yet no less attractive, settings. Some have sun beds and parasols but none have overdone this concession to modern tourism.

Many of the beaches are lapped by very calm, shallow seas, ideal for small children to paddle in but the prettiest beach of all, Psili Ammos, is washed with sometimes, huge waves and is surrounded by wild, beautiful scenery. Psili Ammos is one of the most remote beaches on Patmos and is twenty minutes walk from Diakofti, the nearest village over a mountain footpath. If you prefer a less energetic way of reaching Psili Ammos, you can hop aboard one of the regular boats from the main port.

Nearly every Greek island offers glorious holiday destinations. Each one has its own special charm and beauty but even by Greek island standards, Patmos is very special. Our short visit was enough to tell us that we just had to come back and spend a full vacation there. We didn’t need to believe the dreams of Saint John to realise that Patmos is a dream island, just perfect for dreamers like ourselves. But the kind of dreams Patmos inspires are far more likely to be those of an earthly paradise rather than the hellish world of the Apocalypse.

The Bahia de Mujees is great for swimming because of the low waves. The Caribbean is where you will find the waves for surfing and scuba diving.

The Nichupte Lagoon is a nice place to swim, but the crocodiles that live in the area, may leave people with a bit of skepticism. They crocodiles are said to be harmless and not aggressive, but one can never believe that a crocodile is harmless. You would be better enjoying the other area beach locations than the lagoon. Many of the area restaurants do feed the crocodiles for visitors to see. This alone can make someone a little leery about swimming. Your beach holiday can be enjoyed without seeing the crocodiles.

When you are planning your beach holiday for your holiday to Cancun, you will want to schedule some time for sightseeing. Try the submarine tour by Playa Linda beach. This is an incredible experience, but if you are afraid of tight quarters, you might need to skip the tour. It is amazing to see the underwater activity without getting wet. Many of the beaches are located near the restaurants and shopping malls. One beach in particular that is ideal for children is accessible by going through the Xcaret bus terminal. Cancun has more beach space and accessing some the popular spots requires going through the building and establishments that build up in front of the beaches.
