French Winter Holidays at the Les Houches Ski Resort

Friday, April 17th, 2009
Most ski resorts have an international character. The architecture and facilities are often standard, and the restaurants prepare international cuisines. Thus, this question is reasonable: where can skiers get a true French style holiday while skiing in the French Alps? If the skiers will come into the Chamonix Valley from the west, they will find the answer - the new ski resort of Les Houches.

The Les Houches is a traditional French village in which the geographical domain is located between 950 and 1900 meters above sea level. At the highest elevation, the skiers and tourists will enjoy an encompassing 360-degree view of Mont-Blanc. The ski area has a total of 55 kilometers with 22 well-maintained icy slopes with 10 kilometers dedicated to cross-country skiing. Most ski runs meander through the forest, making skiing even more pleasurable, while the cross-country trails are located near the Chavants Lake.

The majority of the pistes at the new ski resort of Les Houches are suited for beginners and intermediate skiers. However, there is one slope for experts, the La Verte des Houches, which is used for international ski championships. Nevertheless, expert skiers may find greater satisfaction in exploring the nearby regions. Fortunately, when in Les Houches, the skiers will have easy access to the whole ski region of the Mont-Blanc, which comprises a total of 700 kilometers of ski runs spread over 343 pistes. There will most certainly be enough access to black runs for the expert skiers.

More than a hundred snow cannons augment the snow and the skiers will find excellent snow conditions. The skiers are serviced by a modern lift system that has nine draglifts, six chairlifts, one bubble lift, and one cable car. Aside from skiing, the new ski resort of Les Houches also provide facilities for other winter holiday activities such as ski jumping, paragliding, ice skating, ice hockey, dog sledging, and even helicopter tours. All of these fantastic amenities make Les Houches competitive with other ski resorts. But what makes the Les Houches ski resort uniquely French?

The new ski resort of Les Houches has an exceptional and genuine Savoyard vista, which is reflective of the peace-loving and independent French spirit. During the day, the atmosphere is sparkling and animated and during the night, the mood is relaxed and laid back. Thus, during the day, the skiers can concentrate on conquering the slopes while enjoying the spectacular scenery of Mont-Blanc and the charming French architecture of Les Houches and during the evenings, the skiers can relax and spend longer hours in restaurants to enjoy French specialties such as farcement, raclette, fondue, and tartiflette. Of course, there are also shops, discos, cinemas, and nightclubs.

To experience French holidays at the new ski resort of Les Houches, the skiers may choose any of the several methods to reach this authentic French village. They can drive for approximately eight hours, starting from Calais. Or they can fly in through any of the six nearby airports, such as the Geneva Airport.

Where Would Be Your Ideal Holiday Destination?

Thursday, April 16th, 2009
Upon being asked the question of where they would like to go on holiday many would say somewhere in a foreign country, and many of those would say somewhere hot, yet very few would say that they would like to go a few miles away or even leave the country and go somewhere cold, perhaps somewhere interesting. These kinds of people are becoming fewer and fewer.

I personally would have to say I am one of those few, when I go on a holiday I want to learn something, find out something or even do something new. I can relax, but just not very well as I can’t keep it up, I find it boring doing that, I go on a holiday to have fun, not just to lie around in the sun.

With these points in mind I have put together a list of holiday destinations I would be happy to visit, the list is as follows.

The first destination on my list is so obvious, you’ve probably already guessed it, I’m talking of course about Italy, a beautiful holiday destination with lots to offer. If you were to visit Italy then you would be literally indulged with choices of what you could do. If you wanted to visit a place of worship then you could go to one of Italy’s well known cathedrals.

Or for a real treat you could go and see the Pope, can you honestly say you could think of somewhere else where you could do that?. If that doesn’t sound that interesting then you could always take a Venetian gondola ride through the city of Venice, a time to be wowed by its beauty or even just to relax.

For more of Italy’s culture why not visit one of the many art galleries that the country has to offer, although if you really want to see something great, something that you can actually get up close to then why not give the leaning tower of Pisa a try, it’s true what they say you know, it really does lean.

The list goes on, and it’s not all views, Italy boasts lots of places to relax, lots of places to have fun including some great theme parks. I simply can’t give it the justice it deserves using words, so why not book a holiday to Italy now and you can do and see these things as well as many more of them, you won’t know how good it is until you’ve tried it.

The second destination on my list may strike you as a bit odd taking in mind what I started this article saying, but I hope to show you that it isn’t and that it really is worth checking out, I am talking of Greece, perhaps just as beautiful as Italy with it’s own unique culture. There is a quite frankly huge choice of things to do, with such attractions as windsurfing, photography, scuba diving, rock climbing, swimming and even festivals.

But if you want a holiday in Greece I heavily suggest you look into the islands around Greece as some of them are really nice, but once again don’t take my word for it, check it out for yourself.

The last destination on my list some would not really consider as a holiday destination, but if you are one of those people then you may just be missing out, the country I’m talking about is Australia, believe it or not Australia has an astonishing amount of things to do.

If you wanted something interesting to see then you could go a bit extreme with how you do it and get a hot air balloon ride, or if you want something refreshing you could go scuba diving or perhaps you could go sight seeing, Australia is huge and fun for all.

After reviewing these places I have made my choice, the question is, have you made yours?.

Barbados as a Tropical Holiday Destination

Thursday, April 16th, 2009
Barbados, with its fantastic tropical ambiance, is one of the top Caribbean holiday destinations with a high percentage of repeat clientele. Visitors almost unanimously praise the beautiful beaches with their powdery white coral sands and turquoise waters, the friendly and intelligent people, and the modern amenities on the island.

Whether you are looking for a holiday to just relax and keep busy doing nothing but lounging or planning an action packed holiday in the sun, Barbados can deliver. For those of you planning a quiet holiday there are plenty of hotels and apartment away from the traditional tourist areas where you can spend hours laying on the beach or go for a walk in lush tropical gardens, then there are the hotels situated in the heart of the tourist areas which are packed with restaurants, bars, waters sports centres, shopping and so much more.

Accommodation in Barbados is so varied, in price, size and type of accommodation that you are sure to find what you are looking for, these include bed & breakfast inns, apartments, resorts and hotels. There are also many all-inclusive hotels available on the island, both on the south and west coasts of the island. While there are always exceptions to the rule, the west coast of the island is where you will find most of the luxury hotels and resorts (leading the way is The Sandy Lane Hotel, which won top hotel in the world for 2007) and is well known as the playground of the rich and famous. The west coast also boasts some of the most beautiful villas and luxury homes on the island, which rival any featured on Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous, and are available for holiday rental.

The south coast of the island is where you will find the more affordable accommodation although this is also where you will find the top rated luxury Crane Beach Hotel, which is situated on the famous Crane Beach, consistently rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world.

Water sports activities available in Barbados are also numerous and include surfing, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, windsurfing, kite surfing, water skiing sailing and parasailing among others. Most hotels either have there own water sports activities centre or are located near one, although it would be advisable to pre - book some activities with an online travel guide who can advise you of the best and most affordable activities available. You can also learn to surf, wind surf, kite surf and scuba dive while on the island.

Of course there is also plenty to do on land as well including tours, biking, hikes, historical sites, parks, gardens, caves, Golf, tennis, horseback riding and the list goes on, in fact there is so much to do and see in Barbados that you will not be able to do it all.

Nightlife in Barbados is also very busy and you can choose from restaurants, bars, nightclubs, dinner cruises, floor shows, movies (including a Drive-In). Restaurants on the island range from fast food to diamond rated with some of the finest chefs and ambiance to be found anywhere in the world. The nightlife in Barbados, unlike many places in the world, are patronized by an almost equal blend of visitors and locals eliminating the tourist trap feeling that you can feel in many tourist oriented countries.

The beaches on the island range from the breathtaking beauty of the hilly, less populated eastern and northern coasts with their lush, tropical vegetation and huge Atlantic waves crashing against the coastline to the ultra calm waters of the west coast and the relatively calm waters of the southern coastline.

While on vacation, shopping is a must and Barbados has many duty-free stores where you can save considerably on a wide variety of items ranging from top brands in perfume and clothing to Liquor and electronics.

With one of the best road systems in the Caribbean, transportation on the island is not a problem with Car Rental, Taxis, and public buses and for those who are so inclined bicycle rental available.

All things considered Barbados has everything that you could possibly want in a tropical holiday destination. Get ready to fall in love …… with Barbados.

Biking Vacations Over Beach Holidays

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
The first time I had decided to go mountain biking was, believe it or not, at the tender age of 23 years old! It is unfortunately true that during my childhood I had missed the fun and joys of riding a bike down the streets and even more thrilling doing the paper round! Furthermore, I had never experienced the joys of going on mountain biking holidays with my family, more so because no member in my family (with the exception of one or two) could ride a bike!

Now, this is not to say that I had a deprived upbringing. Far from it, I was simply always afraid of doing something that will risk breaking or injuring my limbs - thus my family opted for safer sports such as golf, badminton and (contrary to fears) swimming! However, this never did stop me from learning to ride a bike, and then fifteen years later actually begin to ride a bike - all in an attempt to prepare myself for the dreaded first timers’ mountain biking holidays experience.

Until a few years ago, I did not know that such a holiday existed. In fact, other than skiing, snowboarding, bungee jumping and skydiving, I was not aware of any mountain biking holidays in France - nor was I aware of the mountain biking championships held every year. Clearly, mountain bikers’ right now are probably thinking I had not yet lived until I have at least been involved in one biking holiday!

However, I did learn that places like Les Gets (France), riding the Andes (Chile and Argentina), Cuba and even as far as Ethiopia accommodated space for mountain biking. An adventure like this seems too good to be true for avid biking fans; many would place this on the same par as bungee jumping or skydiving. This is the thrill junkies dream, but also a sightseer’s experience of a lifetime. This is certainly something I am looking forward to experiencing.

Holidays in places like Ethiopia for some people, may conjure up an image of an impoverished country with dusty plains and bumpy rough roads. Far from this misconception lies a colourful history, friendly people full of pride in their country and living in a country, which has some of the highest plateau peaks in the continent. As well as the 6500m of descent, there is still an awful lot of climbing and the odd rocky road tracks and mountain trails to keep you busy.

The French Alps is famous for all it sporting versatility, more specifically skiing. However, when the snow melts down and the sun beams through it is a relaxing yet stimulating mountain biking haven. The high mountain peaks caters for bikers of all levels, from avid professional mountain bike enthusiasts to first time free riders. There are chalets nearby that accommodate for people of all ages and these offer French and English speaking guides to provide people with a tour of the land.

For those looking to relax on the beach Spain, try taking a trip to the Marina Alta Mountains in Valencia whereby people can spend a week following the winding trails whilst enjoying the beautiful scenery beside them. These mountain tracks were originally carved out for donkeys and over the years, these side trails became over grown. However, this mountain trail is almost hidden from tourists; thus making this an uninterrupted riding experience.

People planning a holiday should consider the prospects of mountain bike holidays, this is not something that should be approached hesitantly but more for the joy of experiencing something new. Not to mention a cheaper and ideal way to keep fit whilst enjoying a relaxing holiday abroad. Holidays does not need to involve copious amounts of alcohol and beaches; the option for taking part in something is thought to be uplifting, stimulating and even refreshing.

Treat Yourself, Book Your Next Winter Holiday Now

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
Everyone seems to be feeling the pinch of the credit crunch, frantically trying to save every penny here and there. It seems we are all cutting back and trying to minimise expenditure, however the savvy saver should be thinking long term. Since everybody is doing the same thing, in this case not spending, corporations have been forced to drastically slash prices, to entice the public into loosening the purse strings a little. We are being seduced with the most attractive deals ever on luxury consumer items, such as new cars, flat screen televisions and, of course, holidays.

Is it working? Well, not just yet, it appears people still cant quite justify splashing out on non essential treats. Therefore seemingly crazy bargains are still to be had. Why not consider giving an alternative Christmas present this year and take someone special, or the family on a winter holiday? It is a loving gesture, very generous and will mean you can beat the manic Christmas shoppers.

Spending Christmas away from home and the monotonous, usual routine is exciting and adventurous. With a white Christmas pretty much guaranteed in most ski resorts, a magical and festive atmosphere enchants all in the warm, mountain top, towns that sprinkle the majestic mountain surrounds.

Children love frolicking in powder snow, making snowmen and just harnessing the beauty of youth, whilst adults are never short of things to do and fun to be had. Obviously skiing and snow boarding are the main attraction of a winter holiday, the lure of making fresh tracks, surrounded only by nature and breath taking scenery is enough for most. However for those less inclined, there are many less extreme activities to be enjoyed by all, such as cross country skiing, sledging, hiking, igloo building and snow driving to name just a few.

Another great thing about a winter holiday is the apres ski element, simply a chance for everyone to socialise, get together and be merry, after the last ski lifts have finished for the night. Mountain resorts come alive and take on a new dimension in the evenings, spectacularly illuminated and buzzing with energy, everyone is out maximising every second of their winter adventure holidays. Additionally many adults relish the opportunity to have a few drinks without worrying about driving home and working the next day.

If you are planning a winter holiday this year definitely think about celebrating the new year abroad, an excuse for a all out party. Having been lucky enough to spend a few new years eves in winter resorts, I can not emphasise enough what a different, exhilarating and explosive night it is, the Europeans certainly know how to have a good time and put on a great show. Everyone gets in on the action and combined is a thrilling night of celebrations which is fantastic for all the family.

Barbados as a Summer Holiday Destination

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009
While Barbados is considered by many to be a winter destination, and can see approximately seventy-five percent of its tourist arrivals during the winter months, the island can also be a highly desirable summer travel destination.

The average daytime temperature on Barbados is between 28 – 30 degrees celsius throughout the year. There are two major differences in temperature between the winter and summer months and that is the nights of the winter are considerably cooler than the summer months as the cold fronts from the north pass over the island and although the official daytime temperatures throughout the year change little, the summer months appear to be hotter because it is less breezy.

For those who have always dreamt of a Barbados holiday but always thought that it was out of their budget, summer is the perfect time to fulfill that dream.

Summer travel to Barbados can be considerably cheaper starting with airfare, as the airlines drop prices to fill flights. Hotels are greatly discounted at this time of year with some of them as much as fifty percent cheaper. While this may not apply to all, many of the smaller holiday apartments and guest houses may sometimes even drop their low summer rates even further for large groups or longer holiday periods. Car rental companies also offer special deals, either in the form of extra days thrown in or lower prices, you can pay the same price for a five day rental in summer as you would have paid for a three day rental in winter.

Watersports and other activities companies do not officially drop their rates but like the small apartments and guest houses, it is sometimes possible to negotiate cheaper rates for groups or booking multiple activities.

While the summer months are the official rainy season, the island still averages 9 hours of sunshine per day even then. Rain showers tend to be heavy and brief giving way to blue skies as suddenly as the showers appeared. Making days that start of dismal turn out bright and beautiful.

The official start of hurricane season is in June and it runs through November. While the hurricanes invariably travel through the Caribbean on their way westward, the individual chances of Barbados receiving a direct hit are small. Barbados has only suffered direct hits three times in over 170 years and has been brushed by the edges a few times. More often than not these brushes consist of heavy tropical showers and gusty winds, all in all less intense than a Florida thunderstorm.

Barbados is so far east that most of the systems that pass through the Caribbean have not had time to develop into hurricanes and they are so far south that those systems that do develop tend to travel north of the island and the rotation tends to give the system a northward track. While they are exceptions these tend to be extremely rare.

To put your mind at ease you can check the satellite maps of the Atlantic before your trip as these can show storms or waves in the Atlantic days before before they even reach the Caribbean.

It is amazing that visitors fear the Caribbean in the summer months for fear of a hurricane but will flock to Florida and Mexico that have a higher chance of being hit.

As this period is the low or off season a far as tourist arrivals go the island is more peaceful and there is less chance of the activity or event that you are interested in being sold out, with the exception of activities that facilitate smaller groups of people like surfing lessons and scuba trips which tend to have small groups, and can also make for a more enjoyable holiday.

In terms of people looking for a family holiday destination choosing Barbados is ideal with the beaches swarming with kids on summer vacation from schools as well as a higher number of kids related activities being offered including more kids oriented movies in the cinema and at the Drive In.

The ocean tends to be calmer and warmer in the summer months and this translates to better conditions for many watersports activities including surfing for beginners as well as scuba diving and snorkeling.

Preserve the Magic of the Winter Holidays

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
Are you faced with the question again: “What to get your favorite memories for the holidays?” Well, an idea that inspires – make a show-n-tell cool flash photo movie, your friends, relatives and neighbors will experience their photos in a new light as slideshows full of movie magic on TV! The following article contains three parts: why you create photo movie, which software can realize it, and what’re the skills to make your movie more magic.

Why you create Xmas photos movie:

1.Perfect Xmas memory with numerous transition effects, text, and music, not just photos.

2.Share joy on TV by burning it to a DVD, or enjoy it on iPod, Zune and website with friends during the carnival party.

3.Save Xmas story on DVDs, hard disk, or online space for a long time as you want.

4.Present the unique story DVDs as Xmas gift to each you care.

5.Take your favorite Xmas photos from simple to marvelous riches.

6.The ideal holiday gift for all photo fans.

Which software helps you create photos movie:

With today’s photo album maker software, everyone can make the professional-grade photo movie easily. Many software like below can help you get the job done.

If you have a legal version of windows XP, you can get a free program, Microsoft Photo Story 3 for Windows XP. And Picasa is also free software download from Google that helps you organize all the photos on your computer; edit your photos with a few simple clicks, but Picasa 2 works with Windows 98 or later.

Wondershare Photo Story Platinum is the most innovative and powerful slideshow software now. It is available for Windows 2000/XP/2003/Vista. It’s different from Microsoft Photo Story software. What’s the secret? — Animated Styles. 100+ elaborate effects templates to satisfy all your demands for any special occasion. Besides that, It’ s very easy to create a customized DVD photo movie with photos, and you can add music, transitions, and dazzling effects and make beautiful DVD menus. During my using this program, I find it is powerful in outputting result. It creates .mp4, .wmv, .avi, .3gp, .flv video for iPod, Zune and 3GP Cell Phones, YouTube, etc.

You can use iPhoto to create slide shows if you have a Mac. It allows you add music, transitions, and motion effects transitions. You can turn your slide show into a QuickTime movie. The QuickTime movie can then be burned to CD.

What’re the skills to make Xmas movie more magic:

It is very easy to create photo movie from your photos with photo album software yourself, but it is not easy to create some magic movie. According to my experience for using these three album programs about Microsoft Photo Story 3, Picasa, and Wondershare Photo Story Platinum, The key to make your Xmas photo movie awesome like these flash samples is simple: making good use of the software. Take Photo Story Platinum as an example, the skills as below are very useful.

Apply the dazzling templates subtly: when you select the templates, you can do it as one template to one photo, but if you choose the “advanced template” to match four or five relative group photos, it will combine your photos to a serial segment to make your Xmas movie more professional.

Select the decorative elements for winter holiday: Remember to choose the suitable decorative elements for winter holiday. For example, among the “effect” element list, fire cracker effect and slip effect are all good spice to display your Xmas atmosphere.

Use the animated intro/end effects: It gives you “FULL movie” with intro, movie scene, and end parts. During your movie intro and end setting, the “scroll” text effect and “snow “intro/end styles are very suitable to Xmas movie.

Take full advantage of this software and keep eyes on the animated templates so as to get your perfect Xmas photos movie. If you want to know about the basic operation, you can click the demo tour here. A good news is that in this special Xmas season, many companies provide the special offer like Wondershare Photo Story Platinum, Microsoft Photo Story 3 and Picasa, don’t miss it.
